Terrible Quality Control

I purchased a 14K Generac right after Sandy. Two days after the install I smelled gas coming from the generator. I called the gas company hoping the leak was on their end. After the rep did a pressure test it was determined the leak was coming from the generator. I went down the list of authorized service companies and finally got someone to come and take a look at it. The serviceman could not pinpoint the leak so he decided to replace the whole regulator assembly. So far no leak but I think Generac should be ashamed of their quality control. Once they sell you the unit they don't want to know you. Their customer service stinks. I tried to place a review on their site only to have it rejected. They only allow positive reviews on their site. I would say that's bias. I would not recommend their product.

We need to start a class action lawsuit against Generac. Their ignorance in dealing with their generator issues has got to be brought to an end!

Generac...horrible customer service

Be careful when writing review. Generac monitors the pages & puts fake responses! We did all go through the same hurricane? Funny how suddenly positive reviews appear. Go to amazon & read their reviews....not good! They will repair product 20 times but you will never ever get a new on or see $1 back ever. Good luck...purchase Kohler or any time but generac! Once the sale is made no one knows you and be sure to buy the Extended warranty! Keep records and I hope you find knowledgable electrician who knows the product & actually has parts. You will need parts for sure.

I live in New Jersey. Both repair mechanics have given up on my Generac because the company is so frustrating in sending out parts.

Can any one refer me to a good repair company. Also, has any one replaces the unit. Mine is less than 3 years old and only worked for the first year. I am totally frustrated in keeping emails and phone logs for waiting for people to call me back.

I have had over 25 repair visits and now my warrantee is running out.

Anyone with advice please email me. At docweinstein@***.com.

Misinformation

My Generac XG Series 6500 Watt was delivered to me on 4.10.13. On Saturday 4.20.13 I followed the instructions in the owner's Manual on starting the generator. No matter what I did, the generator did not start. On Monday 4.22.13 I called Generac and the receptionist gave me the name and phone # of a local Generac technician. I then called the technician, and he was extremely helpful. I explained to him that I couldn't start my generator no matter what I tried. He said during shipment sometimes the low oil sensor has a tendency to get stuck. He told me before you bring to me, shake the generator to loosen the low oil sensor, then try and start it. I shook the generator, and sure enough when I pulled the recoil handle, the generator started. This information should be in the owner's manual.

Yes, and they should put in there that you should kick the unit if there are any problems. Duhhhh

Thanks for the tip. Why don't you go to the "familyhandyman.com" website and submit this as a reader's tip?

Also, let us know how the Generac works and holds up. I have heard, both online and thru the gravevine, that Generac generators are not that reliable.

Generac generators poor quality control, extremly poor consumer support

I decided to replace my old, problematic Colman Powermate generator, with a new, higher quality unit. After reading reviews on the larger portable units, my choice was narrowed to two manufactures; Honda and Generac.

My electrical needs dictated a machine with a 6000 to 8000 kW capacity. Both companies offered equipment in this range as well a several units with homeowner, commercial, and industrial ratings. I decided to buy American (we need the jobs!) and to buy an upgraded, commercial unit, just in case. I purchased my Generac XG7000 from Northern Tool Co.

and had it shipped by truck to my home. The installation was very straight forward and because of my previous unit, all the electrical lines, grounding and platform were in place. However, because I had had problems with gasoline's gummy aging issues in the past… and yes, I did use the additives… I decided that I would add a small amount of fuel to the new Generac, test the starting of the engine, and let it use what small amount I had in the tank, stopping when the carburetor ran dry. I wanted the gas tank and carburetor empty.

I then removed the spark plug, and lightly oil down the cylinder walls as recommended for storage, or until I needed to use it. Last week, as the hurricane Sandy approached, I filled the Generac's gas tank and assured my family that we've done everything that we could do to get ready. The winds were high, our neighborhood's trees started to fall, and we lost power around eight that evening. It was clearly too dangerous to walk across the yard to our garage, so I waited until the morning to power it up.

The generator started on the first pull, but when the transfer switch was turned on in the house… no power! I ran back to the garage and pushed the circuit breakers buttons on the generator… no lights in the house. This (yet to be used) generator was not working. I called Nothern Tool and they told me to contact Generac, which I did (and waited for 20 minuets!) and spoke with a customer service rep.

He told me that I had to transport the unit to their local dealer/service center… a well respected local generator installer, Cannondale Generator in Wilton CT. As bad as the weather was, I borrowed the neighbors station wagon and dropped it off that afternoon. Cannondale was clearly overwhelmed with service calls, but said that if I left it, they would have someone take a look at it in the next two to three days! It was made clear to me that their customers would have priority, which I understood.

I went home to a dark, cold, waterless house. In the next few days our home dropped to 52 degrees, we had thrown out our spoiled food, used the showers at the high school, overdressed to stay warm, and carted our water from the forestation. My family was miserable and I was not a happy camper. Four days later, Cannondale's mechanic was able to look at my unit and told me that it had factory defect and should have never have gotten past quality control at the factory… and to top things off, he did not have the parts needed for repair.

I was in shock. I had prepared for this event by purchasing a quality generator, and I got a lemon! I left the shop and called Generac from my car. Once again I was placed on 'hold', having to listen to Generacs recorded promotion… telling me of their 'reliable solution', assurance of 'real value', that I would 'never feel powerless',and insuring the quality of their 'largest, nationwide dealer service'.

Once again customer service eventually answered my call. After I explained the experience that I've had with their product and stating that I would like Generac to provide a replacement unit, or a refund, the rep. apologized profusely, but insisted that refund or replacement was not the policy of Generac, but they would honor the 2 year warrantee by repairing the unit. I informed him of the lack of parts and that no completion date was offered to me.

He again apologized and informed me that this was all that the factory was prepared to do! I asked if I could speak with his supervisor… there was a pause, and he the told me that he was the supervisor… in fact, that he was the Vice President of Sales for Generac, and simply helping out with the phones because of the flood of calls due to the storm. I was speechless. It was clear that Generac had no interest in customer satisfaction.

If not a refund or replacement, why not offer a repair priority? or FedEx the needed parts? or extend the warrantee? The apology was simply not enough.

It was Saturday, and on my ride home, I was informed by radio newscast of the new Noreaster… a storm to arrive Wednesday with 60 mph gusts.

While I owned a Generac, I've been without its service through one of the largest storm crises in the history of the east coast. Generac has shown just how much they care about individual consumers who use their products.

Generac portable generators are good for home in fact of lower power. On the other hand Honda is perfect for small business and home with higher power.

Personally I think Honda is the best.

I have reviews page and you may visit at generator review page . However thanks for sharing such a informative and helpful post.

June 29, 2013. I purchased a Generac Home Stand by in 1998/1999.

It was large enough to run everything in my house and garage with juice to spare. Except my CA without problems. Last week it shut down while testing. My bottom seal was gone large oil leak.

The service man found the exhaust was burned off also. They want $810 to fix it and can not promise nothing else will go wrong because of its age. It has only ran 20 hrs for a ice storm and a hour or 2 here or there. then its weekly test.

I was going to replace it with another Generac until I read everyones problems. They used to make good units but apparently not any more. I have a Amish friend who uses generators a lot. He has been telling me how *** Generac is.

I have decided to take his advice and everyones here and buy a different brand. I am a retired auto worker and believe Buy In America.

But not this time! Thank you everyone!!!!!!!!

Scott R Nhv

After calling Generac Cust. Service on 6 different days, and only being able to reach an out sourced parts rep.

I was finally told that they can only pass your number on to the service rep... That I can't call directly, especially during problematic times!! Gee, I thought that that is when you may need one most. I've never, Never, received a call back from a service rep.

even though I've filed a complaint with the company. My Generac has since been repaired (New regulator & governor adjustment). I've been billed $150 for parts and labor for a unit that has yet to be used. Because I posted a complaint on their Facebook page (which they have since removed), I was contacted by a customer service rep.

who told me that only the parts were covered by warrantee ($50) but that they would send me a check for the total amount for all of my trouble that I've experienced. I have yet to receive that check, by the way!. Because I truly believe that when you buy a product... especially one that is purchased for crisis situations...

you are buying not only the equipment, but also the good efforts of the company that manufactured that equipment, and their willingness to stand behind that equipment. It's clear from all the complaints that I have read ( read the ones from BBB about Generac!) that this is not one of those companies. I have since sold my yet to be used unit (at a loss) and gladly purchased a Honda 6500 for twice the price.

While expensive, in an emergency, that was a lesson well learned. SR

GENEARC 6500 generator

leaking from new, generac's mantra is debris in the fuel tank. just picked it up from repair and it still leaks. Do not purchase a generac product! This is a generac 6500 which was purchased prior to a hurricane 2 years ago for home use because we have been losing power during storms. very low hours and it leaked when it was new so I do not buy the company's mantra about debris in the fuel tank. Do not purchase GENERAC products if you are concerned about your safety. Do not purchase GENERAC products if you are concerned about your safety.

MY GP7500E has leaked 3-4 times in the two years of ownership. I have found that if yuo run the carb dry for storage the needle vale body will corrode and hang allowing gas to over flow the bowl and out the air filter.

The fix was to sand the shaft of the needle valve and re-assemble. Now I shut the gas valve to off and allow fuel to stay in the float bowl.. I also keep Startron and Stabile in the gas at all times and run the unit every other week for 15-20 minutes... so far no leaking ... but now the battery has died ( two years old.

Brand newGenerac generator broke down twice after Sandy; no response from generac to my complaint

We recently invested in a Generac generator for the whole house. It operated from Monday (10/29) at 8 pm until Thursday (11/1) midday. A brush melted and had to be replaced. The electrician advised that he had 7 other Generacs witht he same problem. He got the part and was able fix it Friday (11/2) night. Monday (11/6), it broke again, this time it was a motor. The electrician, who reported the same problem with other Generacs, fixed it on Wedneday (11/8). Generac has yet to respond to my email. A huge disappointment in a product which is meant ot be used in an emergency like Sandy.

My generator doesn't work when I need it!

I purchased a Generac 8kw home standby generator in Sept 2012. This is supposed to be an automatic unit that starts when there is a power outage.

My generator has never worked when I needed it. That means never started during a power outage. The unit works great when not needed, but never has started, and run during a power outage. I have had several visits by qualified service people, but results are always the same.If there is not someone at home when an emergency occurs, and is able to start it manually, the generator won't start, and run.

I CAN NOT DEPEND ON IT. WASTED MONEY!

Check the Natural Gas to Propane gas conversion *** While trying to start your generator in manual mode turn, or slide, the conversion *** in the opposite direction to where it is set now, AND do this ever so slightly. Engine may start right up. I had to do this to mine and got it auto running just fine, then went to a neighbor who couldn't get his to auto run for 4 years, made a slight adjustment and his now starts in auto mode each week for the maintenance run.

Bought a Generac 5383 generator in late 2008 for $7,300. It has shot sparks out of my bedroom wall, made my lights burn 2-3 times brighter than normal when turned on, buzzed and scared the *** out of me.

I have a lot of electronic and need a functional backup. The company that installed and serviced it didn't respond when I told them I was scared of it and was turning it off. I asked if that would cause problems and damage the system. NO REPLY.

Now in 2013 the thing is dead as a doornail and I'm informed that it needs a new battery charging circuit board to the cost of about $500. WHAT? This generator has only run a total of about 4-5 hours.

I feel I was sold a lemon. I can't trust it and don't want to sink more $$$ into it.

I can't comment on your sparks problem as I'm not there to trouble shoot it, but It does sound like something was not done properly in the original installation. As far as the Battery.

If you got 5 years out of the battery your doing pretty well. Once the battery was so bad off it wouldn't take a charge that is what damaged the trickle charger in the generator.

We change out the batteries every 3 years for our customers. Your servicing dealer should have at least tested the battery every year when they serviced it.

Guest

If sparks are shooting out of your outlets and your lights are burning bright the electrical wiring done on the install is incorrect and very dangerous. You should have a licensed electrician check the wiring and correct it immediately!

your problem is not your generator, the problem is it was installed improperly... for 7,300 it is impossible to do it correctly unless they work for free.

Im sorry my friend but the blame comes down on you... you should have checked the companies qualifications before hand,.

but rest assure you are not alone many people are going threw the same thing of not hiring qualified generac techs.

I sell millions and sell generators between 13 thousand and 70 thousand depending on what size but have never sold a gen installed by code and generac specs for 7,300 impossible unless you hire a chuck in a truck company...

GENERAC is junk therefore I am going utube on puter

Screws that hold governor butterflies on came out allowing screws and butterfly screws to get into cylinder resulting in cylinder head, head and piston damage. Not a common problem and should be considered for special treatment.case no. is 159051. Dealing with Marsha Raute, received Email from her May 17 advising me she would get back to me in 2-3 business days. I have called her for the past 10 days and she doesn't respond...I am upset that no one will help me therefore I am preparing legal action and going u tube on puter and giving GENERAC very unfavorable advertisement.

Beware Generac Installers and Customers

We used an approved Generac Installer for our 17KW unit that only worked long enough to break on 9 occasions. In the 4 years that we have owned it, we have never had it make it through a power outage! Generac's Customer Support Resolution Specialist (which is an oxymoron) Evan Cotter, determined that all of our issues were due to improper installation. So how does that happen? A reputable company approves an installer and then does not stand behind their work AND throws them under the bus! Wow! What a company! I strongly urge everyone and anyone NEVER to purchase a Generac. Worst purchase we ever made. On a side note, we did appeal to the company through the Dept of the Attorney General, to no avail. But the outcome is that the lawyer who worked with us was about to buy a Generac. I am sure he is thinking hard about that decision now!

The selling dealers are not "approved" or trained in the installation. A servicing dealer takes the Generac training and would know more about that.

There are no qualification to be a selling dealer. They do have instructions detailing how the generator is to be installed.

Just need to read them. Generac now offers courses to any of its dealers on the proper way to install a generator, but they are not mandatory and they cost money to go to.

The problem is that Generac does not care who they set up as dealers, service or "certified installers" They just like to brad that they have the largest dealer network. They have offered certification classes at the local electrical houses 2-3 hr class.

Generac - 3 Year Warranty; 4 Year Life

In 2008, I purchased a 16KW Generator (about $9,000) and had it professionally installed. It was maintained on annual basis by an authorized dealer. After 9 days of continuous usage during Hurricane Sandy, the Generator stopped working. This was the only extended use of the unit since it was purchased. It cost me over $2000 to replace engine in it's 4th year. Generac opened up a claim which was only to appease me. They refused to help in any way. I would suggest that you look for another manufacturer with a better product unless you can afford buy a new generator every four years.

Sounds like you ran it out of oil! Air cooled engines consume oil as a function of operation. The owner is responsible for checking the oil level during a outage. If you buy ANY air cooled engine product you will have to add oil at least every 12 hours of running ,a fact of life for any brand !

Read your manual! Check this out,Briggs and Stratton generators are made in CHINA,good luck!

Guest

Briggs and Stratton owns Generac and they make the GE, Honeywell, and of course the Briggs line of generators, as well as Generac. Not too many choices left other than a Kohler (good engines)but they have issues as well, maybe not as many, but then maybe because there aren't as many out there in use.

Guest

I believe Briggs & Stratton has a product line that builds Generacs and owns the brand.

Guest

Get rid of it and replace it with a Briggs and Stratton/GE model! This is what most people are doing in south Louisiana due to an astronomical failure of Generacs.

The Briggs and GE models are bullit proof.

I have seen them still running strong after almost 10 years. Briggs builds and markets the GE models.Great warranty too.

Guest

Sir, might i suggest you call Ripleys as they might cover your expenses; i would expect they would do a full story on you, as i personally (believe it or NOT!) have never heard of a generac ever lasting 9 days!...Guiness book of records might pick this one up too

Flawed Generator and Generac will not fix it

I purchased the XG8000E unit after Sandy to provide back up power for my home. After receiving the unit I had an electrician install a change-over switch and test the unit. The unit does not put out the correct voltage - that is - its very low. When contacted, Generac states the unit must be taken to an authorized service center -its 250LBS!!!! When I contacted one of them, I was told there would be a service charge for a visit of $149 to diagnose the problem. Is Generac kidding?! I will never purchase another one of their products and i advise everyone that is considering them to purchase something else as well. The unit clearly was not tested properly. AND, as a final insult - the Service Provider that Generac recommended does NOT SERVICE portable units. Truly despicable!

Purchased my Generac generator 8kw gh410 in Dec 2010. After the first year it stopped excercising and has been down more than it has been working.

I have had 2 companies

Try to get it working. I have had at least 25 service calls. Generac takes weeks to send out the parts that are broken and the company, Hannah who is my resolution person, takes days to answer emails and phone calls. She is very busy, so I must assume that she has many unhappy people calling her.

My unit has been down since June 13 2013. It is now July 31.

I would never recommend this company.

Paula,

I am experiencing the same problem with GENERAC as I'm writing to you this message. My Unit is a portable 15KW generator that has multiple problems.

The unit was picked up by a local dealer and they were trying to fix the problem Generac techinical support for the past three months. Nothing came out of this except, the unit needed to be sent back to thier factory for further diagnostics. Yes that is correct 3 months at a local dealer and no solution.

I told generac that I was not taking back this lemon and they either needed to send me a new unit or my money back. I'll fill you in with details later.

Unreliable backup generator

Despite regular testing and maintenance, our backup generator failed during Sandy. It was only a few years old. I called Generac. After waiting on hold several minutes, they more/less told me "tough luck -- you should have paid us more for a maintenance contract." The maintenance people want over $1k for parts. I am livid.

A backup generator that fails is worthless. A company that purports to have reliable products should stand behind them. I can only conclude that Generac focuses more on marketing than quality or service.

I would encourage buyers to consider other brands if reliability is important.

WOW, was at Northern tool in South Fl. Saw the Generac

8000 watts unit.

After reading the track record of these units guess I'll have to stick with my first instinct HONDA HONDA

HONDA. This should fill the bill.
