I have a 2 tear old 22kw whole house unit in north Texas. Some of the screws are rusting to the point where they are not removeable. The pan which is exposed when you remove the right panel to check the battery is also rusting out and leaving a stain on the concrete pad. Pictures were sent to Generac , a case number generated , and they declined to do anything about it. My factory certified installer has stopped carrying them because of their bad customer service. He also stated Generac knows of the problem but won't correct it. GO WITH ANOTHER BRAND

Defective Head Casting- Insulted by Customer Service

I've owned a GP5500 for approximately 3 years. I keep it for power outages which don't even happen every year. I would start it from time to time just to keep the gas in the carb fresh. Oil changed and levels checked. I do most of my own maintenance on cars and small engines. I was my son's mechanic when he raced quarter-midgets so I know my way around small engines. During a recent power outage my generator was running fine. It has less than 50 hours on it I think. Hobbs meter isn't working. It started running really rough and started to shake badly. It had been running for approximately 48 hours. Oil level was fine. Couldn't get it to pull start. It felt like there was a lot of compression. I knew it was out of warranty so I took it to some mechanics I trust and they told me one of the valve rockers had worn into the support and the exhaust valve was no longer working. They suspect that the engine is toast. I took it back home and took the head off. Everything looks like new. The hole for the pivot pin for the valve rocker which doesn't move much had become elongated. The other side is perfectly fine and there is no visible wear anyplace else. I suspect that this casting is defective. It happens. Sometimes there are soft spots. I called Generac to complain as this just shouldn't happen. I knew I was out of warranty but this is one of those issues that most manufacturers would stand behind(I'm a manufacturer's rep). The female customer service rep on the phone was unbelievably rude. She asked how long the generator was running. I told her it had run for the duration of the outage. She basically called me an idiot because it shouldn't be run for more than 10 hours without a break. I asked her if that is written anyplace. She said she didn't know. I know none of my neighbors had to let their generators rest every 10 hours. I've never heard of that. So I was told I could take it to an authorized service center but I was essentially screwed. So I have to replace the head which will cost about $200 doing the work myself. I thought I was buying a premium product. I could have gotten a much cheaper generator for sure. Generac Customer Service adds insult to injury. Will not purchase from them again.

Not happy with after purchase support

There is none. My generac is in our motorhome and because of this I cannot get any support for a problem I’m having with it. Yes, it’s in a motorhome. Yes generac built it. So why can I not get any tech support? I’ll never buy a generac product again.

I have a portable generator hooked up to a Generac manual transfer switch to power some of the appliances in power outage situations. I recently talked to my neighbor who has the same setup and he said that he has a Neutral switch kit installed for the transfer switch....

I have a 20 kw home generator which is out of warranty. I had local company whom I purchased the generac from check it worked on it about 12 hrs still not running. tech sent photos to generac since he was not able to repair it. generac told him what to check and what they told him was right. the value trane was pulled off and a screw or bearing had gotten in there. there is nothing in there to get loosee so it had to come from the factory like that. I spoke to generac this morning there answer its out of warranty not our problem. all I wanted was a replacement. so looks like I am going to court.

Failed after a year

I had a power outage at my house after the system had been in for a year. The transfer switch failed to transfer power from the generator to the house. I tested it again the next day. This time it transferred power from gen to the house. When I turned back on from utility to house transfer switch failed to transfer both legs of 110. I called Generac. They supplied contact numbers for several local authorized service centers. I called five in total. None were able to come out. Having worked in industrial maintenance for forty years. I cleaned the contacts on transfer switch and got power back to my house. I called Generac back requesting a new transfer switch. They said an authorized dealer would have to confirm it was bad. I called steal and sons in Eaton rapids mi and they came out and spent five minutes and told Generac it was not a warranty issue. This was followed by a bill for $80 for a service call. I am fighting this bill and it looks like I will end up in small claims court

Generac has this motto. We have your money.

Now go away. I have been working on generators since 1973. Generac has always had a bad reputation.

They will find any reason they can to void your warranty. I have had them pull it on me on some of their own equipment.

Waste of Money, Dont last, Service calls, Cost less to go to a Motel

I recently had more problems with my Generac Stand By Home Generator. In the past 18 years, it had batteries changed every two years, oil & filter changed every year but recently the starter, solenoid and control board had to be replaced and battery. The control board was about $500.00, starter $80.00, Solenoid $17.00 and battery $100.00. I noticed it was not starting easy so I checked the valves. This was upsetting. Two push rods had fallen out of place and one broken in half. I wanted to replace all parts involved no matter I could see an issue or not. I called all General dealers online and locally and all said all the parts were discontinued. I spoke to Generac and they said, being over ten years they stop making a lot of the parts. So I had to spend $700.00 to find out these are more or less disposal able after ten years or more. These have an exercise built in so they come on each week and run for about 15 minutes. So in 15 years that makes it about 195 hours. This has under 400 hours on it and it can be fixed because normal parts cannot be bought that might cost $50.00 total. SO they wanted to sell me a new Generac. This is a 10K Generator which is barely enough to run the AC and a few other items like refrigerators and lights etc. The cost to replace it is about $4000.00 not counting installation. To install one it can be expensive for the electric and gas piping. I have seen $4000.00 to $10000.00. I now have to figure out how many times I lose power and for how long. Now in Maryland, I do not lose it much at all. In the past 5 years maybe a few times but no longer than an hour. I did not count a service call for repairs but most generator repair places run about $200.00 an hour at the least. They also use a lot of gas to run your house. I figure I can replace all the food I lose and rent a motel for $10000.00 dollars or more and not have to worry about it starting or getting a service company there. I know my Aunt had one and it broke the week after it was serviced when she needed it. She had to wait two weeks to get them to come back. Generac makes most of there own engines and I cant say how bad they are. Briggs & Stratton, Onan, Kohler all make these generators, but none are cheap, but I would bet they are more reliable than a Gen-A Junk. They tried to sell me a new one several times and said they are giving a ten year warranty. They failed to mention after that you are on your own. No doubt Generac advertises a lot unlike the others. I am sure they cost less as well. So if you are willing to spend this much and can afford to replace it every 10 or 15 years, go for it or maybe buy a better brand.

Generac WILL NOT honor their warranty

After months of sparring with Generac over a broken spark plug on a brand new generator with less than eight hours on it, they agreed to pay the $89 (minus tax) I paid to have it repaired. Five months later and I am still waiting for reimbursement. I'm not sure how I was assigned the name Rampant Snake by Pissed Consumer. It doesn't really matter as long as people are aware that they should stay as far away from Generac as possible. Good Luck! JC

Would not honor warranty

I purchased a 22kW Generac through an online retailer in Feb 2019. It arrived in a few days and was installed by a local electrician who has installed dozens of them and came highly recommended. Since this is a new house build in an area that had no previous electricity we were running the generator more than expected due to problems with the electric company and consistent power supply. Around 30 days after the install the engine blew apart. We called the local Generac rep and he contacted Generac concerning the warranty. Generac stated they would not warranty the 1 month old generator due to the fact we used it as a main power supply for a time period longer than anticipated. Isn't that the intent of a whole house generator?!?!?! We are still in construction of this house so we only used it for short times when electricity was needed for the construction tools. Price quoted to repair $2500.

Thanks for the feedback on Generac but, sad to say this brand is not as reliable as some people claim---as you found out. Talk to people, usually building and construction ones for some recommendations as to a brand(s) more reliable in their experience. Generac is a large outfit and a common one for people to buy but well-known is not always better eg; the Edsel was well-known but definitely not better than other vehicles.

Availability of Parts

I have to wait a whole week for a part so my Generac Tech can install it. It's only 8 months old!! Why don't you supply your dealers with parts needed?? I bought a 11KW Generac.
