Five years ago I spent $3,400 -- plus $1,100 for Generac-certified installation -- for a Generac Centurion Series 13 KW generator for my home. I had the generator serviced faithfully each year by a Generac-certified technician.

The generator was rarely used, except for when it would automatically run its weekly test cycle. Last year, when the generator was four years old, I had to pay a Generac-certified technician $654.37 to replace the generator's brush assembly. The technician advised me that the brush assembly failed prematurely because it became twisted, causing irregular wear and eventual loss of contact. Now, a little over a year after that repair, a Generac-certified technician is telling me that the generator is not working because the rotor and stator have failed prematurely.

As I understand it, failure of the rotor and stator basically means that the generator's engine has to be replaced. I am awaiting the Generac-certified electrical company's estimate for doing this repair, but the company has advised me that I would probably be better off buying a new generator instead spending the money to fix this latest, major, problem. Judging by my personal experience, this Generac generator was defectively designed, defectively manufactured, or a combination of both. Both of these problems arose after expiration of Generac's three-year warranty.

I have contacted Generac about this situation, but I am still waiting for Generac to get back to me.

My generator appears to be an expensive piece of junk. Based on my individual experience, I would avoid buying Generac generators.

Reason of review: Bad quality.

Monetary Loss: $4500.

Preferred solution: The company should provide me with a replacement generator that is not defectively designed and/or defectively manufactured..

Generac Power Systems Cons: Defectively designed or manufactured generator.

not only "junk" but, like companies that make their money on service/warranty type contracts, generac requires a 'certified generac technician' to service the generator otherwise the warranty contract is null and void.. where i live, the (well known) company that installed the my generator charges extremely high rates for servicing the generator; one can only imagine how much they are kicking back to generac for the 'privilege' of being certified to work on generac generator products...!

hard to prove but i'm guessing generac's 'scam' is price gouging at its worse...

my advice? stay away, far far away from generac and go with a more reputable emergency generator supplier/installer (is such one exists!)...!!
